My LDS Book of Mormon Reading Adventures

by ice_hot on March 9, 2009

Reading the is such a delight. As such, reading the has become one of my favorite hobbies. Being a member of the church, since my eighth year, I say that the has become a huge part of me.

The is one of the standard works (Bible, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price and the ).It is a record of the Lord’s dealings with the ancient people of the American continent who lived there from about 600 B.c. to the year 400. It tells the story of two groups of people, the Nephites and the Lamanites their wars and contentions and their day to day adventures.

Mormon was a great Nephite prophet who lived in the latter part of their story. He was the one tasked to abridge the sacred records that comprised approximately 1000 years of Nephite history.  Mormon engraved his abridgment unto gold plates which he later turned over to his son, Moroni. 1400 years later, the same Moroni already a resurrected personage appeared to Joseph Smith and told the young Smith the whereabouts of the gold plates. Joseph Smith then translated said plates with the aid of the Urim and Thummim and published it as the Book of Morm on in the year 1830.

I know. The story behind the is nothing short of outright “magical”. However, I know it is true. The promise is that if you read the , ponder its message in your hearts and ask God if its true, He will manifest the truth of the unto you. Through this process I have known for myself that the is indeed a word of God.

On of my favorite stories in the is that of Alma the younger with the Sons of Moroni and their missionary adventures. Fourteen years they went through the hardest trials and afflictions but in the end they were able to convert entire Lamanite nations.

Every time I read the , I gain a new insight about life and how to live according to the precepts of truth. Indeed as Joseph Smith has said, one will come nearer to God by abiding by the precepts of the than by any other book.

But don’t take my word for it. You have to read it for yourself to know if the is true.
