There are many philippine holy week traditions celebrated during the lent season. Some of these traditions border from the pious to the outright out-of-this world.

Here are some of these holy week traditions:

Pabasa is the non-stop chanting o f the story of the life of Jesus from birth to His crucifixion. The Holy Week tradition of the “Pabasa” also known as the “Pasyon,” will be seen and heard around the country starting today, Holy Monday.

Cenaculos on the other hand depicts the passion and death of Jesus Christ by reenacting his original sacrifice 2 millennium ago.

Flaggelations are also done in some parts of the Philippines. Flagellants strip themselves naked from the waist up, walking barefooted under a midday sun and flagging themselves bloody with ropes and broken pieces of glass attached with strings to bamboo sticks.

Moriones festival is celebrated in the island of Mariduque. Townpeople dress up as Roman

legionaries and figures from the Bible. The masks and helmet called moriones are brought out and the bloody melodrama of how Jesus Christ was crucified begins.

Siete Palabras. All radio stations throughout the nation are being sponsored by religious groups to air the reading of the “Siete Palabras” (Seven Last Words). There are series of speakers depicting the life of Jesus Christ and of course in different versions but the same meaning. Aglipayans, Episcopalians and Roman Catholics do this simultaneously.

Amulet Hunting. In the remotest areas of the philippines such as siquijor, shamans or quackdoctors usually take advantage of the “power” of the Black Friday to gather different amulets and plant roots. They say that items gathered during this season are more potent.
